KINTSUGI - ART AND MUSIC THERAPY
online art therapy workshop
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. In this art therapy workshop, we will be exploring the modern method of this tradition to repair broken ceramics with gold, dwelling deep into the healing aspects of the subject. The music therapy segment of the workshop will be conducted in the "waiting" periods of the kintsugi activity. During this time, we will learn how to mindfully and consciously listen to music together, then we will allow the music to guide us through a short reflective writing exercise. As we work on repairing items with gold and highlighting their imperfections, we may find that themes of loss, grief or acceptance may start to emerge. The music listening activity aims to bring these experiences to the surface in a safe and contained manner.
